Other stuttering treatment programs that you might have tried

There is a plethora of stuttering treatment programs in the market today, yet most of them don't deliver long lasting results of natural fluent speech. At most they will make you fluent for a month or two due to a distraction or placebo effect, or make your speech sound mechanical and unnatural. Take a look below to see if you have tried any of these programs.

Breath Control Methods

These methods ask you to take a full deep breath or make a continuous hum every time before saying a phrase. The problem is that it makes your speech unnaturally slow, breathy, and mechanical sounding. In addition, you don't need to force words out by breath or hum through them when you're talking to yourself, children, or pets. So why should you now?

Speech Motor Methods

These methods ask you to control every speech muscle including your mouth, lips, tongue, teeth, and larynx. It has a different sequence of muscle movements for saying every vowel and consonant. The problem is that it makes your speech mechanical and unnecessarily complicated. You also don't do all this when you're talking fluently to yourself, children, and pets.

Spontaneous Speech Methods

These methods simply ask you to not use any speech techniques and just say whatever comes to your mind without thinking about or planning your words beforehand. While it is certainly freeing to do that, you can't speak off the cuff all the time because there are occasions that require you to know what to say beforehand, like people's names and common greetings.

Public Speaking Methods

These methods claim that you can overcome your stuttering by becoming good at public speaking. Public speaking uses a different neural pathway than the regular speech to your coworkers and friends. There have been numerous accounts of PWS's delivering great speeches on stage, then not being able to say their names or order food after coming off the stage.

Self-Help Motivation Methods

These methods mostly offer advice on relaxation, meditation, self acceptance, positive thinking, improving confidence, and showing authenticity. While all these practices can improve the quality of your life, they offer little direct or tangible effects on helping you overcome stuttering and increase your fluency.

External Device Methods

These methods rely on an external device, such as an earpiece that plays what you've said back to you a couple milliseconds later, or a metronome that keeps the rhythm of your speech. The problem is that these devices would only make you fluent for a short period of time due to a temporary distraction effect, after which you will revert back to stuttering.

If you have tried any of the above methods and didn't see any long lasting improvements on your fluency, now it's time to join the Silverfluent Program. In fact, most other methods don't promise fluency but only controlled disfluency because they are not effective and their instructors still stutter.

"This program is one of a kind because it gives you a natural way of speaking fluently. I grew up as a severe stutterer and after 3 months of being in the program I was able to talk pretty fluently without much stuttering. I think Dong really understands the challenges that stutterers face and teaches you ways to deal with them one by one, especially the part about wanting to appear congruent. I've tried a lot of speech therapy in the past and this program has by far helped me the most. It does require a lot of work though especially the daily practicing when talking to other people and also the mental practice."

- Parker (Austin, TX)

"I was almost hopeless in my struggles with stuttering until I came across the Silverfluent Program. Most other programs out there say that you have to use some breathing technique and deliberately stutter and talk in certain weird ways, and you would actually get praised more for using their techniques correctly than actually speaking fluently. Silverfluent really clicked with me because they believe that fluency is the end goal of any stuttering treatment, not another way of stuttering involving deep breaths and long pauses. When I started using the vocal modulation and auditory feedback techniques, my stuttering immediately went down by a lot and I was able to say most of the words that I blocked on before. Even though I still have some way to go to reach complete fluency, I think I've made some great progress and I'm confident I can get there in the near future."

- Larry (San Diego, CA)

"Silverfluent has helped me with my speech so much. What amazes me is that at first I thought the speech techniques that Dong taught would only last a short time before I go back to stammering again, but after a few months of using them my fluency actually stayed and I never relapsed! Now I might still have some small blocks and stammers here and there, but I can talk fluently most of the time. This is so liberating especially after decades of severe stammering where sometimes I can't even say my name or introduce myself to other people. I can't thank this program enough and I'm definitely committed to doing the practice and the drills everyday!"

- Ahmed (London, UK)

"I took a live training bootcamp with Dong in San Francisco in 2020 and it was the most eye-opening experience I've ever seen. I think he's absolutely right that even when stutterers become fluent, they still have to deal with issues of not knowing what to say and not knowing how to carry out conversations from all those years of stuttering and switching words. So even after I became mostly fluent, I knew I still had a lot of work to do in terms of improving my social skills so I can make good conversation with my friends and colleagues.

For the live bootcamp Dong took me to some of the popular shopping districts and bars in San Francisco, and had me approach and talk to strangers. At first I was absolutely scared to my guts, but then he did some live demos that blew my mind. He was able to approach strangers on the street, introduce himself and disclose about his stuttering, then talk to them and make them laugh without ever running out of things to say. I can't imagine even fluent people doing that, much less stutterers. After seeing his demo I tried to talk to strangers on my own, and people were a lot friendlier than I thought. Dong gave me some advice about making conversation that helped me on the spot, and I felt more confident about what I can do than ever before."

- Jeremy (Scottsdale, AZ)

"One of my friends who also stutters told me about the Silverfluent program so I tried it out. There are a lot of stuttering therapy groups in India but this one gives really good advice that's made to fit you. The course is very organized with one coaching call a week to go over your sticking points and give you homework, then you will go out and practice by talking to other people. The techniques that Dong taught are a bit different than the other therapy groups I tried, but they helped me get over my stutter when I talk to my coworkers or have to present to the managers."
